JAMES SMITH, Theft > grand larceny, 17th September 1817.

1282. JAMES SMITH was indicted for stealing, on the 29th of August , one basket, value 6d., and fifty-two pounds of butter, value 3l. , the goods of George Bowles .

GEORGE BOWLES . I am a salesman at Newgate-market . On the 29th of August, the butter stood on the bulk in my shop-Glocester gave me information - I ran out and overtook the prisoner with the flat on his back.

THOMAS GLOCESTER . I saw the prisoner take hold of the flat, suspecting him, I told Mr. Bowles, he followed and took him immediately.

Prisoner's Defence. It was given to me to carry.

GUILTY . Aged 45.

Transported for Seven Years .
