1041. LYDIA GORMAN was indicted for stealing, on the 23rd of Feb., 4 yards of a certain cloth, called Orleans, value 2s.; and 1 pair of stockings, 8 1/2 d.; the goods of David Le Boutillier; and that she had been before convicted of felony.

MILES GABRIEL . I am in the service of David Le Boutillier, a linen-draper, in Northumberland-place, Commercial-road. On the night of the 23rd of Feb. I missed four or five yards of Orleans cloth from inside the door—it was pinned—I then concealed myself behind some goods—in five minutes I saw the prisoner come to the door, and take hold of a piece of plain cloth, which I had seen unpinned—she then came and took a pair of stockings, which were on the stick, hung to an iron—she then unpinned the piece of Orleans cloth, came back, took the stockings away, and out them under her

shawl—I went after her, and caught her by the waist—she dropped the stockings—I pushed her into the shop, ran for a policeman, and gave her in charge—these stockings belong to my master—I have not seen the cloth again.

Prisoner. Q. When you first took me, did you mention about any Orleans? A. No; I did not know it was gone till I went back.

HENRY ISAACS . I live in Swallow's-gardens—I was in the Commercial-road—I saw the prisoner and two more with her—I saw her unpin a plain dress; she then went on the left-hand and unpinned another, but did not take it—in a few minutes she returned, put her arm up, and laid hold of the stockings—I saw her take the stockings—when the witness caught hold of her round the waist, she dropped them—the witness took up the stocking—these are them.

SAMUEL WIGGINS (police-constable K 73.) I took the prisoner—she said, in going to the station, she did not care; there could not be much done to her, as they were not of much value.

LAMBERT WILKINSON (police-constable G 175.) I produce a certificate of the prisoner's former conviction, which I got from Mr. Clark's office—(read)—she is the person.

GUILTY . Aged 23.— Confined Six Months.
