NEW COURT SIXTH DAY.

Third London Jury - before Mr. Common Sergeant.

1799. WILLIAM WILSON was indicted for stealing, on the 8th of August , 2 pocket-knives, value 4s. , the goods of Charles Griffin .

SARAH GRIFFIN . I am the wife of Charles Griffin , a perfumer , of Skinner-street . On the 8th of September, at half-past seven o'clock in the evening, the prisoner came and asked for some pen-knives - I showed him several; he said they were not good enough; he wished to have some with two blades, and said he wanted two of them to make a present of; I showed him some, and he chose two at 2s. 6d. a piece, but he said I ought to let him have them for 4s., which I agreed to do - he took the money out of his pocket; I was going to wrap them up, but he took them up, said he wished I might get the money, and ran out- I cried Stop thief! my brother pursued, and brought him back with them in ten minutes; I am certain of him.

Prisoner. She said when I was examined that the young man who came in cut a bit out of his thumb; when she saw me at the watch-house I had my coat off, and she said I was not the man. Witness. He cut a small piece out of his thumb in opening one of the knives, and it bled at the watch-house; he was rather intoxicated, but perfectly conscious of what he was doing.

HENRY ANDERSON . I am the prosecutrix's brother. I was in the next shop, which is only separated by a thin partition; I heard her cry Stop thief! and ran out; she was at her door, and pointed to a man running across the road - I pursued him across Fleet-market, and when he got to Holborn I took him; I did lose sight of him, as he got between the stalls.

THOMAS WILDER . The prisoner was brought to the watch-house; there was 6s. 6d. and a farthing found on him, but no knives; there was a cut on the joint of his thumb, which the prosecutrix described; he was not very

drunk - he said, what a pity it was, and that he was a hard - working man.

Prisoner's Defence. I came down the hill - I do not know the name of it; there was a mob of people shouting Stop thief! I ran - a man came and took hold of me, and said I had stolen two knives, which I had not.

GUILTY. Aged 23.
