<join result="offencePlace" targOrder="Y" targets="t17210525-1-off7 t17210525-1-crimeloc4"/> she met 3 Men and a Woman; that the Prisoner snatched her Handkerchief off her Neck, and wrapt it round his Finger; that she was sure he was the same Person, for she saw him plainly when he took it, and that he was not out of her sight till he was taken: that he offered her a Crown to let him go; which she refused, then told her that he would give her an India Handkerchief for it; but she reply'd, that she would not let him go unless he would give her her own again.

<interp inst="t17210525-1-person33" type="gender" value="male"/> </persName> deposed, that he hearing the Prosecutor cry stop Thief, stopt the Prisoner, who then told him that the Prosecutor had pickt his pocket of a Crown, whereupon he bid him go back and take it of her; that he pretended to be drunk; that he made what Resistance he could, but he secured him till the Prosecutor came up; when he offer'd her a Crown to make it up. The Prisoner denied the Fact, but called none to his Reputation, and the Evidence being very positive that he was the Person, the Jury found him

<p>He was a second time indicted on the late Act of Parliament for the more Effectual Transporting of Felons, Ec. For that he having been

<interp inst="t17210525-1-off7" type="offenceSubcategory" value="returnFromTransportation"/> formerly Convicted of a Felony, and Transported among other Convicts from Newgate for the same, had returned into Great Britain without any Lawful Cause </rs>, which being fully proved upon him, the Jury found him

<join result="persNameOccupation" targOrder="Y" targets="t17210525-3-victim41 t17210525-3-viclabel18"/> and cheapen'd a pair of Stockings, and took those mentioned in the Indictment; but he missing them, followed her to Bow Church-Yard, brought her back again, and found them upon her; when she fell down on her Knees and begg'd Pardon.

<interp inst="t17210525-7-person66" type="gender" value="male"/> </persName> deposed, that he work'd with Mr. Biggs, and observing the Prisoner full of Money askt him how he came by it, who told him that a Gentleman had left him part of a Room of Furniture; that he had sold a Gold Watch for 40 s. and had other things to sell, asking him (this Evidence) to buy them; that he pretended (by contrivance of his Master) to buy them, who went out on purpose to give the Prisoner an Opportunity to bring them into the Shop, that he might come in the interim and see what Goods they were; that as soon as the Prisoner had brought down the Goods (which proved to be those mentioned in the Indictment) his Master came in and caught him: That he consult before the Justice that he took them out of the Gentleman's Room by means of a false Key, and brought them into his Master's Shop to sell them. Which Confession was read in Court. The Prisoner in his Defence said, that he used to wait on Mr. Petit when he lodged there, and was much in his Favour; that when he was going into the Country he gave him (the Prisoner) the Key of his Room, and the Goods, telling him that he might sell them when he would after he was gone; and that he took nothing else but those mentioned in the Indictment. H. Curling and J. Ticknell, (Mr. Petit's Nephews) deposed that there Uncle gave them his Key of the Room on purpose to send his Goods down to him; that when they went into the Room and mist the Tankand and Cup, the Goods mentioned in the Indictment were there: that they bad written to the Country to know if he had given them to the Prisoner, and had received an Answer that he had not: that their Uncle was not able to come to London, being Bed-rid; and that the Prisoner's Key would open the Lock as well or better than his. That a Friend of his (the Prosecutor's) met him in the City last May-Day and brought him to him, when he owned he took the Wigs, and would have made a Debt of it.

His Confession before the Justice was read in Court. The Prisoner in his Defence said, that he workt for Sergeantson, who told him that he was apprehensive of Trouble, and askt him to carry a Bag of Tools for him, for fear they should be seized; but he thought they were his own; and as to the Money, he said that Sergeantson owed him above 40 s. for Work he had done for him, and gave him the 17 s. and 6 d. in part of Payment, he called a Gentleman of worth to his Reputation, who gave him a very good Character. That he had the Guineas in his Pocket Half an Hour before at Richard's Coffee-House at Temple-Bar, and that his Friend came along with him from thence, whom he had just parted with as he met the Prisoners, that they met no Body by the Way that could take his Money, and that he was not Drunk. - Mongomry (the Watchman) deposed, that the Prosecutor held Johnson, and he took Price, that he put them all three in the Roundhouse: and that he had carried Johnson and Price to Prison before for Night-Walking. Johnson in her Defence said, that Price and she had been at Chelsea, and going Home Price stopt to tye her Garter, that the Prosecutor came by and put his Hand up her Coats; that she (Johnson) desired him to be civil to Price she being with Child: whereupon he turn'd to her (Johnson) and put his Hand up her Coats; and said she was so Fat he could not feel what she had; so went to Price again, who he ran against a Door; and would have lain with her there, but the People opening it they had like to have fallen in; that then he forced her to another Door, then another, and because they would not comply called the Watch and charged them with picking his Pocket; that he was very Drunk and would have lain with a Woman in the Roundhouse, Mr. Trenworth deposed, that he came along with the Prosecutor from the Coffee-House, saw he had Gold there; and that he was not drunk. <interp inst="t17210525-56-person320" type="gender" value="female"/> </persName> deposed, that on Wednesday the 12th of April, Spencer and her self went to Hall's Lodgings; that Hall was not at Home, but Bray was there and made them both Fuddled, desired them to lie down on the Bed and not to go away till she (who was going out a little way) came back again; that she came back and waked them, and about 12 a Clock Hall and another Woman came Home; that they staid there all Night, and the next Morning they all went out together and Drank at a Brandy-Shop in Bishopsgate-street; that Spencer call'd Hall aside, and told her that she had no more bad Money, and Hall reply'd, that the might go home to her Room and make some; and if the has any occasion for her, she would meet her at the Bell and Horse-shoe in Bishopsgate-Street at 2 in the Afternoon, (the strange Woman then being in Company) that they met accordingly, and Hall brought the Metal with her, and after they had Drank Two or Three Pints of Beer and Ale, Hall bid Spencer, Bray, and this Evidence go to her Room and make a Fire, and she would be with them as soon as it was lighted; that as they went to her Room Bray went into a Shop and bought the Materials to make the Molds; that Hall came as soon as the Fire was made, lockt the Door, melted and refined the Metal whilst Spencer and Bray made the Molds: that Hall melted the Metal and Spencer cast the Counterfeit Shillings to the Number of 40, which were all they made that Day: that Spencer gave half a Crown apiece to Hall and Bray for their Trouble; took the Flasks or Molds with a Shilling in them, telling them that if they were found in their House it were enough to take 20 Peoples Lives away, and gave them to her (this Evidence) to carry, for fear she should be taken up being known to be a Person dealing that way; and left the Ladle and File in Hall's Room in a Cupboard over the Door; saying, they could not make any thing of them if they should find them: That Spencer had Five of the Forty that were made then, and she (this Evidence) had the rest, but could not tell justly how many they were, being given to her wrapt up in a Paper.</p>

<interp inst="t17210525-56-person322" type="gender" value="female"/> </persName> (the former Evidence, who he was inform'd carry'd bad Money for Spencer) coming along, and told Mr. Fenton and Mr. Nichols that they were concern'd in Coining; that they carry'd them to the Tavern, and searching found 28. Counterfeit Shillings and the Molds with a Shilling in it on Miles; but nothing on Spencer, that the Money was wrapt up in a Paper, but the Molds in a piece of Leather and a Handkerchief, that when he took the Molds from Miles and laid them on the Table (not knowing then what they were, being in a Handkerchief) Spencer snatcht them up, and said, You Bitch are you going to hang us both: and they struggled a good while before they could get them from her. Then Spencer called him out and offer'd 30 l; to let them go.</p>
<p>Mr. Fenton and Mr. Nichols confirm'd the same with this Difference only, that Mr. Fenton deposed Spencer offered them 30 l. a piece to let them go.</p>
<p>Mr. Plumridze deposed that he heard Spencer say she was a dead Woman; that the 28 s. and the Molds with a Shilling in them were sealed up before the Justice, that he had had them in his Custody ever since; and that what he then produced in Court were the same, and the Leather and Handkerchief which they were wrapt in.</p>

<p>Mr. Plumridge being called again and shewed Counterfeit Shillings that were kept by themselves deposed that he had them of Mr. Pinkney.</p>
<p>Mr. Pinkney deposed that he had them from Mill and delivered them to Mr. Plumridge.</p>
<p>Miles being called again, deposed that she had that of Spencer in the Prison, and gave them to Mr. Pinkney</p>
<p>Mrs. Bunn deposed that the saw Spencer pull 5 Shillings out of her Bosom in the Prison Yard the next Morning, and give them to Miles; and that she perceived them to be Counterfeit.</p>
<p>All of them denied the Fact, and Spencer and Hall called some to their Reputation.</p>

That he saw him in New Prison, and knew him from the other Men; that he took some Letters out of the Bag and left him to put up the rest: that he was on Foot, Booted and Spurr'd, and said his Horse was at Colebrook.</p>

<interp inst="t17210525-57-person331" type="gender" value="male"/> </persName> deposed, that one Shaw came to him as he was a Bed, telling him he had a thing sent to him would be the making of him; that Shuffle (which was the Prisoner's Nick-Name amongst them) had Robb'd the Bristol Male: that he went with Shaw to the Prisoner's where he found Dickinson: that he Prisoner gave Dickinson two Letters taken out of the Bristol Male: giving an Account of some Money coming up by the Pack-Horses and by the Waggon: that the Prisoner hired a Horse for Dickinson, and he (this Evidence) hired one for Shaw, who went in quest of the Booty: but they were overpower'd and pursued and Dickinson's Mare was rid to Death: that while they were gone the Prisoner was very uneasy that he had trusted such an Affair in their Hands, for fear he should be betray'd, or they should cheat him of his Snack; that when Dickinson return'd, he came to this Evidence and desired him to carry the Horse to Shuffle: for he had got no Money, and was afraid to see him.

<interp inst="t17210525-57-person332" type="gender" value="male"/> </persName> deposed, that he saw the Prisoner in Company with 2 Highway Men whilst they robb'd the Exeter Coach; that he did not rob the Coach himself, but stood by, anst Rode off with the two that did, that this Evidence riding by at the same time, the Prisoner knockt him off his House, and said he had a good mind to Shoot him; that he had seen him Drinking with Snow on Tanbam Green, and on the Road several times.</p>
<p>Mr. Archer deposed, that he went with Hickes and Barlow to New-Prison to let them see if they knew the Prisoner, and gave them Directions that they should not speak to one another, but give him their Opinion separate: that they both told him the Prisoner was the Man; that he was walking first with one Man, then with another, not alone, but about 12 or 14 People walking; and that he gave them no hint to discover the Prisoner by.</p>
<p>Mr. Bell deposed, that he was in the Office when the Male came in the 18th of January; that the Bristol and Bath Bags were broke, and above 600 Letters taken out.</p>
<p>The Prisoner denied that he was the Person, saying that he had been bred up to the Sea and liv'd very well while he followed it, which was till he received a Hurt in his Should r, about 5 Years ago, which disabled him for that Service; and that he was unfit to rob on the High Way: that having saved some Money, he set up a Chandler's Shop in Covent Garden, and lived very honestly and in credit there ever since, and called the following Persons to invalidate the Evidence of Reading and Hickes.</p>
<p>One Evidence deposed, that he heard Reading say, that rather than be Hang'd himself, he'd Hang half the Nation; nay he'd Hang the Devil. That Reading told Strut that he was the King's Evidence; and if he would not give him 5 pieces he would hang him. That Strut gave him 3 Guineas, and a Note for 2 more; which not being paid, he swore a Felony against him.</p>
<p>One Johnson (a Soldier) deposed, that he heard Reading say in New Prison, that Wade had brought it upon himself; and it was his own Fault, for he met him, and he would not come down to him; upon which he Rapt at once.</p>

<interp inst="t17210525-57-person334" type="gender" value="male"/> </persName> deposed, that he bailed a Friend of his out of New Prison, who told him, if he did not, Reading would sweat away his Life; that Strut was taken up again, and the Constable had 2 Guineas of him, and he (this Evidence) gave Reading Half a Crown, who swore that he was not the Person.</p>

<interp inst="t17210525-57-person335" type="gender" value="male"/> </persName> (the Post Boy) had taken Money out of his Pocket several times; that one time he caught him, and he gave him his Money again; that he dragg'd him thro the Horse-Pond for it; and that he never saw the Prisoner before.</p>
<p>Mr. Davis deposed that he was acquainted with Mr. Cheesbrook's Sons at the Post-Office in the Hay-Market, and heard James Hickes say, that he could not be sure it was the Prisoner; but be believed that he was the Person. And that he said it was a dark Rainy Morning.</p>

And that it had Rained just before, but was cleared up then. And that this Soldier (pointing to Johnson) offered him 20l. not to swear against the Prisoner, and desired him to go with him to Wade's Wife, and askt him as they went along, Whether if Mrs. Wade would give him 10 or 20 l. and put him out Appentice in the Country, he would was stifle his Evidence.</p>
<p>Johnson being called again deposed, that he never saw Hicks in his Life before this time.</p>
<p>Hicks again deposed, that he was very like the Man.</p>
